First-Time Farmers Bring Fall Festival Fun

In 2018, Jane and Zach Blough took a leap of faith. The couple purchased 170 acres in Federalsburg and began their lives as first-generation farmers. While Zach continued a lawn care business and Jane worked as a full-time nurse, they dove headfirst into poultry production. But their true calling emerged a few years later when they decided to share their farm with the community.

“In 2021, we decided to expand our vision by opening JZ Farms Fall Fest. We really wanted to create something that can provide a safe, educational place for families to enjoy and make memories. Having three children of our own, we know how quickly time passes and how important it is to cherish those little moments,” Jane says. “We wanted to create a place where families can slow down, connect and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

In their first year, the Bloughs hand-planted their first pumpkin patch, constructed a 10-acre corn maze, and relied heavily on family and friends to bring their vision to life. The inaugural season welcomed thousands of visitors. “That first year, we welcomed 4,500 visitors, and from that moment we knew we had found our calling,” Jane says.

Their pick-your-own pumpkin field now spans five acres and features over 15 different varieties. Visitors can choose from classic orange Krato pumpkins, blue Jarrahdale varieties, whimsical Fairytale pumpkins, tiny Jack Be Littles, sunny Mellow Yellows, elegant white Blancos and various gourds for fall decorating.

Along with U-Pick pumpkins, the farm has a variety of activities for people of all ages, still including the 10-acre corn maze with an added GPS activity, as well as a kids’ corn maze, jumping pillows, barn-themed games and friendly farm animals, like their miniature donkey. “Our visitors get to create memories with their families and friends and start traditions for years to come,” Jane says.

“Today, our farm has grown into a multi-season agritourism operation, offering U-Pick pumpkins, strawberries, sunflowers, zinnias and other flowers, in addition to our corn maze, school field trips and family activities,” Jane adds.

The Bloughs’ story reminds us that the best family traditions often begin with a simple decision to try something new. “Starting JZ Farms was a labor of love, and a whole lot of trial and error,” Zach says. “But seeing families laughing, playing and making memories here makes it all worth it.”
