A Watermelon Fit for a Queen

The Mar-Del Watermelon Queen Program is a unique, year-long experience designed to promote the watermelon industry throughout Maryland and Delaware. The queen plays a pivotal role in educating the public about the health benefits of watermelon, the importance of buying local, and how watermelons are grown.

Karli Abbott, the current Mar-Del Watermelon Queen from Trappe, Maryland, was drawn to the program by its uniqueness and the breadth of experiences it offers. “The title itself  — Watermelon Queen — captures attention, but what really drew me in was the amount of opportunities associated with the role, like travel, public speaking experience, managing a social media platform, networking and a chance to explore my interest in agriculture,” she says. “It was, and still is so interesting to me that one fruit could provide so many things.”

Throughout the year, Karli represents the industry at local fairs, grocery stores, schools and other community events, promoting watermelon consumption and advocating for the hardworking farmers who make it all possible. At the end of her reign, she can compete for the National Watermelon Queen title at the National Watermelon Convention, bringing her local expertise to the national stage.

For Karli, one of the most rewarding aspects of the Watermelon Queen program is the chance to learn about the agricultural industry from the inside. She has participated in farm tours, met local watermelon growers, and immersed herself in the growing process. “My role centers on promoting local watermelons. I highlight their health benefits, share recipes that utilize the whole watermelon, and tell the stories of our farmers,” she says.

Karli’s love for agriculture stems from her great-grandfather, who was a farmer, and her time on his farm left a lasting impression. “Growing up, I was involved with 4-H and FFA, which definitely broadened my understanding of agriculture,” she says. “But it honestly wasn’t until I became the Watermelon Queen that I had the opportunity to explore my passion for the industry.”

This strong sense of community, along with the opportunity to engage with people in various settings, has made the experience even more fulfilling.  “The people within this industry — from farmers to distributors — are exceptionally supportive and close-knit. When I first became the Watermelon Queen, I had numerous questions, and everyone was always ready and willing to provide answers,” she adds.

In addition to her passion for agriculture, Karli has many other talents and interests. She plays five musical instruments and enjoys hobbies like quilting, baking and volunteering as a 4-H assistant and firefighter. Through her many interests, Karli brings creativity and enthusiasm to her role as the Mar-Del Watermelon Queen, making her a fantastic ambassador for the watermelon industry.
